Award Nomination for Shelley O'Connell
Clelands Lawyers Adelaide are proud to announce that Senior Associate Shelley O’Connell has been nominated for the Law Society of South Australia’s Mary Kitson Award.
The Mary Kitson Award was first introduced in 2015 as the Gender Equity in Law Award, and was renamed in 2019 in honour of Mary Kitson, South Australia’s first female lawyer. The Award was established to recognise a contribution to the advancement of the interests of women lawyers and/or recognise contribution to issues in legal practice that affect women.
Shelley has made many contributions towards the advancement of women in the legal profession and of gender equality. She is a past President of the Women Lawyers Association of SA and sat on its Board for around 13 years, at the same time as sitting on the Law Society’s Women Lawyers Committee (as Chair for several of those years). Shelley was also an inaugural Member of the Law Society’s Gender Equity Working Group while sitting on the LSSA Council.
Shelley has undertaken extensive work in relation to gender equity, including advising on legislative reform in policy areas affecting women, playing an active role in equitable silk selection, mentoring young women in the legal profession, organising networking events and charity fundraisers, and campaigning for new opportunities for women in the law, as well as advocating for women in the community at large.
Shelley has achieved all of the above while practising family law, studying Mandarin, and being a mother to her young daughter.
Clelands Lawyers Adelaide are very proud of Shelley for receiving this nomination and the work she has done to achieve this. We wish her all the best for Friday 2 August, when the winners are announced.
